Ingredients

  • 2 chicken leg quarters
  • 1 cup white rice
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2/3 cup rolled oats
  • 1 (10 ounce) package chopped fresh spinach, (or frozen thawed and squeezed dry)
  • 2 cups fresh chopped broccoli,
  • 1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans - rinsed, drained and mashed
  • 2 carrots, shredded
  • 1 clove garlic, minced (optional)
  • 1 cup cottage cheese
  • 1/2 cup olive oil

Directions

  1. Place the chicken leg quarters in a large pot, and fill with enough water to cover by 1 inch. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer 40 minutes. Remove the legs and allow to cool. Strain and return the cooking liquid to the pot. Once the legs have cooled. remove and discard the skin and bones; chop the meat, and set aside.
  2. Stir the white rice into the reserved chicken broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until the rice is tender, 45 to 50 minutes. Drain off any excess liquid, and add the rice to the bowl with the chicken.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat, and add the ground beef. Cook and stir until the beef is crumbly and no longer pink, about 7 minutes. Pour off any excess grease, and place the beef into the bowl. Stir in the oats, spinach, broccoli, kidney beans, carrots, garlic, cottage cheese, and olive oil. Store the dog food in resealable containers in the freezer. Thaw the daily portions overnight in the refrigerator.

  • Cook's Note:
  • Dogs love the flavor of garlic, but too much will make them anemic. Use it sparingly or not at all.
  • For variety, try adding one of the following:
  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin in place of the carrots
  • cooked, cracked wheat in place of either the rice or oats
  • black beans or chickpeas, mashed, or lentils in place of the red kidney beans
  • steamed and finely chopped celery or cauliflower
  • steamed peas
  • shredded cheese
  • mild, cooked fish
  • scrambled eggs
  • fish oil in place of olive oil

    PEANUT BUTTER DOG BISCUITS

    "A great, crunchy all-natural treat for our furry four-legged friends. If you don't have spelt flour, you can use all whole wheat. 

    Ingredients

    • 2 cups whole wheat flour, or as needed
    • 2 cups flour
    • 2 cups quick-cooking rolled oats
    • 1/4 cup flax seeds
    • 2 1/2 cups warm water
    • 1/2 cup natural peanut butter
    • 2 tbs natural honey

    Directions

    1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
    2. Combine wheat flour, spelt flour, oats, and flax seeds in large bowl. Stir in water and peanut butter. Knead dough on a lightly floured surface, mixing in more flour as needed until dough is smooth and no longer sticky. Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thick. Cut with small cookie cutters into desired shapes, and place 3/4 inch apart on greased cookie sheets.
    3. Bake 40 minutes. Turn oven off; leave biscuits in oven until completely cool.

    A BASIC RECIPE 

     

    Basic Dog Food Recipe

    Ingredients
    4 cups uncooked rice
    9 cups  water
    1/4 cup oats


    Combine all ingredients in a large saucepan and bring to a boil.  Once the mixture is boiling add:

    1/2 cup 2% milk
    2 tablespoons parsley, chopped fine
    3 ounces liver, chopped fine
    8 ounces ground beef (or chicken or lamb)
    3 tablespoons olive oil
    2 eggs, beaten
    2 cups vegetables (carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, etc.), chopped fine
    Stir, turn heat to low, and cook for about 20 minutes until all water is absorbed. Then spread out in flat Tupperware containers, cool and cut into half cup squares. When feeding, add cottage cheese or yogurt, and 1 tsp. supplement mix per 30 lbs of dog weight:

    1/8 cup powdered kelp
